There’s been lots of talk about Disney’s streaming service but not a lot of facts. Now, after an event at the company’s Burbank campus in LA, we know a lot more. Importantly, the Disney+ service will only launch on 12 November, and will cost $7 per month, or $70 for the year.

These days Disney is not as much a movie studio as it is a media empire, consisting of Pixar, 20th Century Fox, Marvel Studios, Lucas Film as well as National Geographic. For this reason, Disney+ should be filled with enough content to keep initial viewers of the service quite happy. However, Disney+ will remain family friendly fare, with the Hulu streaming service (in which Disney owns a 60% stake) focussing on general entertainment (think No under 18s movies and series).

Worth noting is that the Star Wars original series – The Mandalorian, as well as another based on Cassian Andor (played by Diego Luna in Rogue One) – will debut and remain on Disney+. The same applies to two series coming from Marvel: Falcon and Winter Soldier, as well as WandaVision, which  joins Scarlet Witch and Vision on their romantic adventures together. Also kiss goodbye to 30 seasons of The Simpsons on any other service except Disney’s.

According to The Verge, Disney is likely to bundle Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu at a discounted price once Disney+ launches. It brings them in direct competition with Netflix, which has seen Marvel series, such as Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Man, recently cancelled.

With Amazon Video and DC Universe in full swing, and Apple TV Plus coming in 2020, the video streaming space is looking to be an extremely competitive one. However, it remains to be seen how many services consumers are willing to sign up to per month. It’s also not known whether Disney+ will make it to South Africa, and what impact it would have to local services such as Showmax. Watch this space we suppose.
