Dota 2 now the first game to run on Valve's new game engine
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 11 September 2015 | Categories: newsBack in 2004, the first game to run on Valve's Source Engine was Counter Strike. Now 11 years later, a bit long for an update if you ask us, a new game engine, unofficially named Source 2, will run Dota 2 Reborn as a free to play MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Area).
The Beta for Valve's new Source 2 has been in operation since June this year, but now as Eurogamer reports, the MOBA has received a substantial overhaul which includes a new UI and refined gaming modes.
Last month, a version of Dota 2 Reborn featuring a 20 player battle mode was showcased at The International (Dota 2's championship tournament), alongside the competition which had the largest pot in gaming history - a cool $18 million. The winners of set contest were Evil Geniuses, who walked away with $6 million of the $18 million kitty.
Most believe that this move from Valve will prove a solid one, not only because of the popularity of its Steam service, but also because of the game it has chosen to run. In 2004, as Engadget points out, Counter Strike was the competitive multiplayer to own, but now that honour goes to Dota 2.
