Drake smashes online streaming record with new album
By Staff Writer 9 July 2018 | Categories: newsDrake fans, this is one to be proud of. Billboard reports that the Canadian hip-hop artist’s latest album, Scorpion is the first album ever to hit one billion streams in a single week. Regardless what you think of Drake or his music, those are impressive numbers, with these tallied across all platforms.
He did so in the first week of Scorpion’s availability (29 June-5 July), beating out Post Malone's beerbongs & bentleys which previously held the global streaming record, but with 300 million less than Drake (27 April-3 May). In fact, just Stateside Drake smashed 750 million streams during the week.
Scorpion was heavily punted on streaming platforms, especially Spotify, which basically spammed their listeners with a Drake artist takeover. Those who are not Drake fans demanded a refund, and some got it, with Digital Music News reporting that Reddit users were receiving refunds from Spotify after complaining.
“I just messaged Spotify customer service on their website and told them I wanted a refund since this is advertising and I pay for premium with no ads, and they have now refunded my last payment,” wrote Reddit users Schwagschwag.
Others users were not so fortunate, reporting the following, less than helpful response from Spotify: “We're sorry to hear you're unhappy with Drake showing all over Spotify. We’ll be sure to let the right folks know. We appreciate your feedback as it helps inform our decisions going forward. Rest assured that the Browse section will be back to normal soon.”
Will Drake be able to maintain the momentum and get another record in week two? Time will tell. In the meantime listen to Watch Mojo run through the top tracks of his new album below.
