Facebook acquires facial recognition company FacioMetrics
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 17 November 2016 | Categories: newsFacebook has made yet another significant purchase, this time snapping up facial recognition company FacioMetrics. FacioMetrics specialises in machine learning algorithms that allows smartphone cameras to analyse human faces in real-time.
As for what they'll be bringing to Facebook, the company provided a statement to VentureBeat, nothing that FacioMetrics, "will help bring more fun effects to photos and videos". These types of features are already present in Snapchat, the social media app that Facebook is vying to compete against, as The Verge points out.
With Facebook-owned platform Instagram launching a very similar feature to Snapchat in the form of Stories a couple of months ago, could more copycat-esque aspects be imbued into the photo-sharing app in future? Only time will tell what this acquisition yields.
