In an effort to not only address the growing need for more programming skills, but also to create a more diverse range of people interested in programming careers, Facebook launched its new TechPrep website. TechPrep is a research hub where "unrepresented people" and their parents can find and access computer science and programming resources, according to Facebook.

"We created TechPrep in response to our understanding, supported by research from McKinsey [research firm], of the participation of underrepresented minorities in programming careers," stated Facebook's Global director of diversity, Maxine Williams.

Added to this, TechPrep will aim to connect people to resources including games, books, in-person opportunities and community events to help learners, and guide them into computer science and programming. It also includes profiles of real people pursuing these careers.

McKinsey & Co's research found that 77% of parents say they do not know how to help their child pursue computer science. This percentage increases to approximately 83% for lower income and non-college graduate parents or guardians. As such, a website that helps both children and parents have a better understanding of computer science could go a long way in addressing the aforementioned statistics.
