Over the past few years, Facebook has made efforts to make access to its services and applications easier in regions where internet connectivity and data prices are restrictive to users. To that end, we've seen products like Facebook Lite and Messenger Lite, and now the latter has been rolled out to a further 132 countries across the globe.

The company's head of Messenger, David Marcus took to (you guessed it) Facebook to make the announcement, noting that the Lite version of the instant messaging app is designed for devices with limited memory and processing capacity.

That said, Messenger Lite is not a lesser version of the fully fledged app, according to Facebook, with users still capable of chatting to the estimated 1.2 billion people making use of the service.

With Messenger Lite now available to more than 150 countries across the globe, there are still several significant ones without access to the service, including Italy, Japan, Mexico and New Zealand, as reported by TechCrunch. With Messenger Lite limited to Android devices for now, Facebook has made good strides, but still has some work to do in increasing access to its services for those without ample amounts of connectivity or data.
