Ah, we made it through Matric and now we find ourselves trying to adjust to all the temptations of first year university, as portrayed in Willem Samuel’s Mengelmoes #3. Our protagonist is studying Fine Arts in Stellenbosch, finding it difficult to keep his head straight through a time that one would think he should actually enjoy a bit more.

Sprinkled through #3 you’ll come across pastor spacemen, Dawie die Kabouter, strange robots spreading an even stranger gospel, soul-sucking student digs, the lost art of taping CDs, and the power that was Fokofpolisiekar’s early days. The unimpressed look on our hero’s face after seeing a particularly, well, arresting, Robert Mapplethorpe photo sums up his experiences in #3 quite aptly.
