As the year is starting to come to an end, we’ll see more and more ‘Top’ lists pop up that bring us the best of 2015. One of the first is photo sharing site Flickr, which has released its Top 25 images of the year.

In a blog post, Matthew Roth, community manager for Flickr, noted that the selection process for its Top 25 didn’t simply come down to image views. “The photos were scored by an algorithm that calculates a combination of social and interactive elements, including how often the photo had been faved and viewed, among numerous others,” he wrote.

The top image of the year is actually free to use for anyone since it falls in the Public Domain. The photo (see above) was taken by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, who posts on Flickr under SpaceX Photos, and shows the company’s Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft launched from Launch Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

A quick, totally non-scientific scan of image data reveals that out of the 25 images, nine were taken with Canon cameras, followed by Nikon in second place with five. Sony and Leica scored two images, while Fujifilm and Olympus cameras were used to capture one each. There were five images for which Exif data was hard to come by.
