To date, e-books have simply been digital recreations of their paperback forebears. Google wants to change that however, launching a new platform called Editions at Play to leverage the power and functionality of internet-connected smartphones.

One of these experimental books is called Entrances & Exits by Reif Larsen, a love story told through the power of Google Street View, allowing readers to experience actual real world locations that pair up with descriptions within the e-book. Another is The Truth About Cats & Dogs by Sam Riviere and Joe Dunthorne. In it, the two authors combine their personal diaries to tell the story. As such, it's described as having no "right way" of reading it, allowing readers to switch between the two author's sections.

These are two of the first titles that Editions at Play has released, with several smartphone-optimised e-books lined up. While the experimental platform has a limited library at this stage, the use of smartphones for a more interactive reading experience is certainly an intriguing one.
