Last night Huawei launched their latest flagship devices, the P20 and P20 Pro, in Johannesburg. The phones' arrival comes a little after one week after the pair were revealed at a global unveiling in Paris on 27 March, marking the shortest turnover time that Huawei has managed to date.

The devices will be available to purchase at all major mobile retailers, starting today, with the P20 costing a recommended R12 999 and P20 Pro going for an estimated R15 499. Although not on display at the event, Huawei will also be launching the P20 Lite locally today as well, carrying a price tag of R5 999.  

Both phones are fairly similar in terms of specifications, sporting the same octa-core Kirin 970 chipset, as well as 128 GB of onboard storage. Where the Pro differentiates itself from the standard model is its larger 6.1" bezel-less display compared to the P20's 5.8" offering. The Pro version also boasts more RAM at 6 GB, with the P20 serving up 4 GB.

The key difference, however, is on the rear, with the P20 Pro featuring a triple lens setup from Leica. The mix includes a 40 MP RGB (f/1.8), 20 MP monochrome (f/1.6) and 8 MP telephoto (f/2.4) lenses, with Huawei touting its ability to make amateur mobile photographers even better. Added to this is AI-assisted object detection, which offers the best options for different scenarios, but this can be toggled off for those who want to experiment a bit.

In terms of colour options, the P20 will be available in Black and Blue, with the P20 Pro coming in Black, Blue and the gradient Twilight variants.
