Kingdoms of Amalur may be raised from the dead
By Ryan Noik 7 September 2018 | Categories: newsHere is some unexpectedly good news – THQ Nordic has bought the rights to 2012’s Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the enchanting action RPG that came to an inexplicable end when 38 Studios went bankrupt soon after the game’s release.
It was all the more of a pity, since Kingdoms was an expansive RPG romp with enough lore to rival The Elder Scrolls, and with an MMO called Copernicus slated to be the next project set in the same universe. The game was also gorgeous, even if it was on last gen consoles, no doubt due to the pedigree of its designers - R. A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane, and Ken Rolston.
Six years is a long time to languish in the void of forgotten gems we expected to never see again. THQ Nordic’s acquisition though, raises hopes that Kingdoms of Amalur could receive a remaster, the IP may find new life in another game, or that Project Copernicus may see the light of day after all. Strengthening the likelihood of any of these is the fact that the acquisition includes not just the licenses for the games, but the assets as well.
Somewhat poetically, the protagonist of Kingdoms is a soul resurrected from the dead. Hopefully, THQ Nordic, formerly Nordic Games, which brought Darksiders III back from the abyss of THQ’s own bankruptcy in 2013, can do the same for Kingdoms of Amalur as well. Watch this space.
