It appears that foldable screens, and now a foldable PC is the future. This week, Lenovo debuted its take on the foldable phenomena, with, rather than a folding tablet or smartphone,  a foldable PC.

The device, which is set to join the company’s ThinkPad X1 family of products, was featured at  Lenovo’s Accelerate event, currently taking place in Orlando, Florida in the US.   

The company noted that in the past, a 13.3-inch screen on a notebook demanded that the device stay at that same size footprint, but this is no longer the case, with the single OLED 2K display able to be folded in half and reduce its width by 50%.

The rationale behind the development is that users want access to a large, comfortable screen on the go, but travel can make this inconvenient or impossible, as anyone who has lugged a  17” notebook can no doubt attest.

As well, Lenovo pointed out that remote work increased 140 percent from 2008 to 2016, with more and more employees taking time-sensitive, media-intensive projects with them everywhere.

Whereas foldable phones are envisioned as being dual phone-tablet devices, it seems that Lenovo’s vision for the PC is for it to function as a dual PC-Tablet in form factor and usage. The device, according to the company could be used as an ebook and news reader, to do general office work, as a digital notebook, and watch and stream movies, with it converting between being hand holdable and resting on ones lap.
