Motorola was once a brand that dominated the local feature phone space, but in years since has seen its popularity decline. The iconic "hello moto" sound is not dead and buried, however, as Lenovo (which owns Moto) is relaunching the Moto brand here in SA. The company made the announcement official at a launch event last night, and also showcased its flagship modular device - the Moto Z.

According to Lenovo, it's the world's thinnest premium smartphone, measuring just 5.2 mm thin. Up front, there's a 5.5" QHD Amoled display which yields a 1440x2560 resolution and 535 ppi pixel density. Taking care of the processing internally is a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, clocked at a speedy total of 3.75 GHz. Added to this is 4 GB RAM and 32 GB or 64 GB onboard storage options. It also caters for up to 256 GB extra space via a dedicated microSD slot.

The device's most notable feature, however, are the Moto Mods. Lenovo is bringing four to the country to launch alongside the Moto Z on 1 November at selected local retailers. The Moto Mods include a Power Pack to add an extra 22 hours battery life, JBL-designed SoundBoost speaker for high quality audio, Insta-Share projector and our favourite the Hasselblad True Zoom camera. All four mods attach and detach to the Moto Z via a series of smart pins located on the back of the device.

Recommended pricing for the Moto Z and Moto Mods is as follows:

Moto Z: R12 999
Moto Insta-Share Projector Mod: R4 699
Hasselblad True Zoom Mod: R4 299
JBL SoundBoost Mod: R1 699
Incipio offGrid Power Pack Mod: R1 199
