Microsoft ends support of Windows Phone 8.1
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 12 July 2017 | Categories: newsIf you're a fan of Windows Phone, we have sad news, as the mobile operating system will no longer be supported by Microsoft. Windows Phone 8.1, which rolled out nearly three years ago, has reached end of service this week, which means updates will no longer be porting to devices. While it spells the end of Windows Phone, remnants of the OS still exist in Windows 10 Mobile, although Microsoft has been rather quiet in that department as well.
This recent end of service announcement leaves quite a few people out in the cold as far as support goes. According to AdDuplex, an estimated 80% of Windows Phone-branded devices are still running Windows Phone 7, Windows Phone 8 or Windows Phone 8.1.
As such, if your device isn't capable of making the jump to Windows 10 Mobile, it is time to consider buying a new phone. Even then, that may not be enough, with the fate of that operating system also up in the air.
Perhaps taking a look at HMD Global's new Android-based Nokia smartphones is worthwhile, especially if you like the look and feel of Nokia and Lumia designed devices.
