Things have been a little quiet on the Virtual Reality front of late, with the slew of new devices and developments from earlier in the year, providing very little in terms of an update. Thankfully though, Sony PlayStation has released a new video detailing what it's been up to with its Project Morpheus headset. Titled an "Exclusive Interview," the 3-minute long video sees a handful of developers that have a key role in the VR headset's creation weigh in on how things are going.

The overall feel is obviously positive, as director of SCE London Studios Dave Ranyard says, "the thing we want to do more than anything else, is get people to forget that they're in VR." Adding credence to this vision is programmer at Media Molecule (the guys behind the very intriguing Dreams), Anton Mikhailov. "It's really a lot of different possibilities for gameplay exploration that really hasn't been explored before," enthuses Mikhailov.

Coming to fruition

While these ideas are certainly great in theory, it appears as if the more technical aspects of Project Morpheus are being updated in order to meet this goal. In fact, the headset we first saw at the Games Developer Conference in 2014 is quite different to the current iteration. "Technical advancements have game creators coming up with some totally new experiences," according to Shuhei Yoshida, president of SCE Worldwide Studios.

A big part of that improvement is built upon the new 5.7" OLED display (1920xRGBx1080) that Project Morpheus sports. "The stars have aligned in terms of technology for VR," notes Raynard. More specifically, the new Project Morpheus can render at 120 fps, along with all the embedded motion sensors allowing gamers freedom in terms how they view (approximately 100 degree field of view) and interact with content. Furthermore, PlayStation believes the overall VR experience is heightened thanks to Motion controller integration. When playing a VR game for example, instead of using a standard Dualshock controller, the Motion controller provides more of a weapon-like feel and feedback, according to Sony.

While the video sadly does not end with any hint of an impending release to the public, it's clear to see that Sony is one of the frontrunners when it comes to VR in the world of gaming.
