Oppo targets South African market with big battery A6 smartphone

If Oppo’s higher-end Reno smartphones are a bit too pricy, then the latest A-series model that dropped might be of more interest. Priced at just below R9k, the Oppo A6 smartphone is positioned as a high-endurance option for consumers in a competitive mid-range market.
The device follows as manufacturers increasingly pivot toward "rugged" features, such as enhanced waterproofing and extended battery life, to differentiate their hardware (see Honor’s X9d or the REDMI Note 15 series from Xiaomi).
The standout feature of the A6 is a 7000 mAh battery, a capacity significantly higher than the industry standard of 5000 mAh. Oppo claims the battery is designed to maintain 80% of its original capacity after 1800 charge cycles. In practical terms, the company suggests this supports up to five years of regular use.
Furthermore, the A6 carries an IP69 rating – the highest level of protection against dust and high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. There’s also a Spray Water Removal feature, with micro-vibrations that expel dust and water from ports.
Unfortunately, the A6 comes without 5G, which means super-fast network speeds are not available. The device runs on Android 15, with ColorOS 15 as UI – one version below what runs on the latest Oppo Reno15 Pro (review).

The core specs of the A6 stands as follows:
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 (as found on the Honor X8c, Xiaomi Redmi Note 13)
- 8 GB RAM (expandable via Oppo software) with 256 GB of internal storage
- 6.75” HD+ display (1570x 720 pixels) and a 120 Hz refresh rate
- A 50 MP main camera, with an 8MP selfie camera, with the ability to shoot underwater.
Available in Aurora Gold and Sapphire Blue, the Oppo A6 is on offer with a promotional bundle offers that may include OPPO audio wearables and smartwatches, depending on operator availability across Vodacom, MTN, Telkom and Cell C.
At R8 999 the A6 feels slighty over-priced, especially with it’s main competition from the Redmi Note 15 Pro+ 256GB 5G and the Honor X9d, both 5G units and better specced at R1k more. Not to forget Oppo's own A6 Pro 5G in the same region.
