RED is a company that specialises in high-end cameras, such as its 4K and 8K offerings, but they appear to entering the world of flagship phones by debuting the Hydrogen One smartphone. Still in its prototype phase, the 5.7" device touts "nanotechnology" which could allow the display to switch between regular 2D and an immersive 3D holographic view.

The company has not shown the technology in action, but has already begun taking orders for the Hydrogen One, which will come in two variants. The device's body will be available in either an Aluminium body for $1195 (R15 900) or Titanium version for $1595 (R21 300).

While we're unsure how the 3D display will work, this is not the first time the technology has been integrated into a smartphone, with the Amazon 3D Fire and LG Optimus boasting similar functionality.

Other specifications for Hydrogen One have not been fully disclosed, but it is said to be running an Android OS, sports a USB Type-C port and microSD slot for expanding storage. Curiously the most interesting aspect, the Hydrogen One's camera, has not been detailed. Given RED's history in that area, we're hoping for something noteworthy.
