Red Bull Basement Hatch brings innovation to Cape Town
By Staff Writer 13 August 2019 | Categories: newsFor the first time Red Bull will be hosting its tech and innovation day, known as the Basement Hatch, in Cape Town on Saturday the 31st of August. Opening the doors to innovation, networking and fresh inspiration from experts and influencers, the workshop will take place at the Woodstock Exchange and will feature a host of important speakers, under the wing of its MC, Vuyolwethu Dubese.
This highly valuable gathering is open to all, especially tech enthusiasts, makers, creatives, designers, IT students, incubator managers and funders, all of whom will have this rare opportunity to share, learn and develop their ideas through all things tech related. The theme for this Hatch will be “Using Technology for Social Good/ TechForGood”.
Red Bull notes that in order to guarantee a truly productive occasion for all in attendance, the day will be split into two distinct sessions. The first part of the day will be for Show and Tell which will include a series of pertinent talks and panel discussions by a selected group of speakers. The latter half of the event is known as the Hands-on Session, during which all participants can share an experience, with the aim of creation through collaboration. The audience is encouraged to bring their damaged electronic devices to the event as they will be repaired during the 3-hour Repair Cafe Hands-On slot.
Amongst the prominent speakers, attendees will have the chance to listen to the director of Maker Station, Felix Holm, sharing his thoughts on the topic of The Maker Culture - Hacking for our general use, as well as software engineer Sewagodimo Matlapeng delivering a Shecodes Live Demo based on the concept of Using Facebook’s Spark AR to tell Unique African culture through tech.
Besides several other highly relevant talks will be the Geekstars spots during which top Geek Idols Shailen Naidoo and a representative from the Zaio team will upskill the audience on the latest trends and movements in the expanding world of tech and coding.
The Red Bull Basement Hatch event first kicked off in Sao Paolo in 2015 then came to South Africa in 2018. In this short period it has spread to no less than 22 countries and enabled some 155 innovators to participate through its Residency program. The arrival of the Hatch in Cape Town will herald further development and enhancement of the nation through the collaborative use of technology.
