If you own a Samsung Galaxy A5 or A7 (2017 models), or the S7 and S7 Edge, and want Samsung Pay, you're in luck. Samsung South Africa today announced a free firmware upgrade to assist customers with these specific devices, where they can visit participating Samsung Service Centres for this upgrade. Doing so will save them up to 5 GB of data on the device software update and they will receive a free installation and activation of Samsung Pay. The upgrade offer will run from 23 May to 6 June 2019.

The upgrade process is as follows:

  • Customers are to visit a participating Samsung Service Centres from 23 May 2019 and request their free upgrade.
  • The Service Centre will confirm that the device is a Galaxy A5/A7 (2017), S7 or S7 Edge device (South African models only) and then complete their upgrade.
  • The support staff will then perform the free installation and activation of the Samsung Pay app.

Customer can enrol a compatible payment card or loyalty card, but this is optional.

Samsung Pay is the company's mobile payment solution and this free installation will allow more Samsung users to make use of the tap-and-go convenience. The company notes that this digital wallet gives Samsung Pay supported devices the functionality of a bank and loyalty card, which can be used where you can swipe, insert or tap a payment card.
