Today, Mobile World Congress opened its doors to thousands of attendees. The previous day saw multiple new devices be unveiled, but Japanese company Sony opted to stick with its usual tactic and have its own press conference on the morning of the first day.

Said conference was not very long, but did feature one significant announcement in the form of the Xperia XZ Premium. Much like the Z5 Premium, this device aims to push the boundaries of what previous Xperia devices have been able to muster. To that end, it's filled to the brim with some of the best mobile technology around.

One of the key specifications is the display, which happens to be a 4K one that can handle HDR (High Dynamic Range) visuals, something the LG G6 also claims to tout thanks to a collaboration with Dolby Vision. Sony has not listed the 5.5" display of the XZ Premium's resolution, but GSMArena says it is 3840x2160 with an 801 ppi pixel density.

Two more elements also stand out about the XZ premium. The first is that it will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 internally, which makes it one of the first smartphones to do so. It will be paired with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB onboard storage, with a microSD slot for 256 GB extra. The second aspect is the camera, which is no longer the 23 MP one used in last year's Xperia devices, but rather a 19 MP Motion Eye version that features 960 fps super slow-mo.

At this stage, no local release or pricing has been detailed, but Sony is aiming to debut it in select regions in the second half of this year. We'll be chatting to Xperia South Africa's country manager at MWC, so hopefully more clarity will be given then.
