Given that both Sony and Microsoft crowed over reaching the one million mark with the launch of their respective PS4 and Xbox One next gen consoles, Sony can now add another feather to its cap, that of breaching the two million total sales mark at the beginning of this month.

This comes in the wake of the PS4’s arrival in Europe, Latin America and Australasia at the end of last month, two weeks after it first became available in North America.

“PS4 delivered the best launch in PlayStation history with the North American release and we’ve continued this incredibly successful start in Europe, Australasia and Latin America,” commented Andrew House, president and group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.  “Demand remains incredibly strong and continues to overwhelm the supply worldwide, but we are diligently working to meet those growing demands and to deliver additional PS4 units to our retail partners throughout the holiday season,” he reassured. 

Socially speaking

According to the company, PS4 users had apparently already embraced the social capabilities offered by the PS4 system, with Sony citing heavy use of live broadcasting on Ustream and Twitch, and sharing content through Facebook and Twitter.  Sony added that PS4 gamers have apparently demonstrated particular interest in the new Share button on the Dualshock 4 Wireless Controller, with more than 6.5 million shares captured to date.

Of course, the PS4’s launch is not completely done, at least as far as local users are concerned. The next-gen console will be making its appearance here on the 13^th of December, so it will certainly be interesting to see what kind of local adoption it garners.

Playing right into Sony’s hand is the fact that, unlike in the US, South African players don’t have to choose between a holiday purchase of the Xbox One versus the PS4, since the Xbox One is only expected to arrive here at some point next year.
