Tesla's electric vehicles have often placed a lot of emphasis on driving range. More recently though, the focus has also been on speed, with the recently unveiled Model 3 sporting a supercharged "Ludicrous Mode", as Elon Musk terms it. Now, one of the company's latest vehicles, the Model S P100D, also touts a Ludicrous Mode that takes it from a standstill to 60 mph (98 km/h) in 2.5 seconds. That rapid acceleration has prompted Tesla to christen this new vehicle as "the quickest production car in the world".

In order to keep fact checkers in place, Tesla's blog announcement also cites that the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder, two cars that can put up similarly speedy numbers, as being limited production and no longer capable of being purchased new. 

While the Model S P100D's status as the quickest production car in the world carries a few provisos, it is far less expensive than many of the supercars with a 0-100 km/h time in the three second region. Indeed, the P100D's pricing starts around the $135 000 mark, and can also seat five adults. 

The car's 100 kWh battery ensures it can travel 613 kilometres before a recharge is required, which makes it one of the first electric vehicles to surpass the 482 kilometre barrier.
