In its bid to be more transparent, Twitter recently released the findings of its latest Transparency Report. Detailing account-related occurrences on the social media platform from January to June 2016, it makes for some interesting reading. Perhaps the most enlightening insight, as Engadget also highlights, is the number of requested removal requests, specifically made by the United States government.

While the US made a reported 152 fewer requests for accounts to be removed compared to the same timeframe last year, the country's government agencies were responsible for an estimated 44% of all removal requests. The majority of these came from the FBI, as the organisation has been aiming to lessen the influence of ISIS on the social media platform.

Twitter also received a higher number of requests to remove tweets, up 13% from last year. These requests predominantly came from Russia and Turkey, both of which were responsible for the highest numbers in this category last year, according to the social media company.

The most interesting finding, however, as TechCrunch points out, is that 46% of account information requests are accompanied by a gag order from the United States government. As such, those account owners are not informed when the US government requests their information.
