UK aims to ban sale of fossil fuel cars by 2040
By Robin-Leigh Chetty 26 July 2017 | Categories: newsThe UK government has laid out an ambitious plan that's designed to improve air quality in the region. According to the Guardian, British lawmakers aim to ban the sale of fossil fuel cars by 2040. The UK is not the only area where such a plan has been outlined, with France detailing a similar initiative in the past month that also sets a 2040 deadline.
Air pollution has been cited as one of the biggest environmental threat to public health, according the British government, and this new plan is part of a £3 billion strategy to bring about drastic changes.
Along with banning the sale of fossil fuel cars and vans by 2040, the UK lawmakers are also planning to retrofit certain modes of public transport. Added to this will be changes to the roads system, and adjusting traffic light patterns in a bid to make the network operate more efficiently to lessen the amount of carbon emissions.
There will no doubt be opposition to this proposed plan, with it yet to be seen how British carmakers will react to the initiative. If all goes well, we could well see more electric vehicles from the likes of Land Rover, Jaguar and Aston Martin in coming decades.
