Uber may be known primarily as a ride-sharing app, and more recently for food delivery, but the company has also been getting into the 3D mapping game of late. To that end, Uber's director of product, Manik Gupta, took to the company's blog to detail that it has extended its 3D mapping to Singapore.

With the addition of Singapore, the company is now mapping in five continents across the globe. While that in itself is a noteworthy accomplishment, there appears to be a larger plan at work here. 3D mapping, which essentially consists of using cars with 3D scanners to more accurately capture the information of a city's roads, will make the Uber ride-sharing experience better, according to the company. On top of this, it begins to pave the way for Uber to create a system for self-driving cars, and more specifically an option for carmakers to adopt that isn't Google.

As such, it appears that Uber's next big foray will not only be a fleet of self-driving cars in modern cities, but also the development of autonomous vehicle technology to sell to car manufacturers too.
