Fixed line operator Telkom officially launched 8ta, the country’s fourth cellular network operator last month. Today the company launched its contract and top-up offers.

8ta unveiled five contract offers, ranging from R90 to R500 per month, with each package being accompanied by a special offer. These special offers include enabling customers to make free and unlimited calls to a single landline number of their choice. Other popular pre-paid offers have also been extended to the contract packages includes the “50 free SMSs for every 5 SMSs sent” offer.

Users are able to choose a handset for any of the contract offerings from a selection ranging from affordable models the likes of the Nokia E63, through to more premium ones such as the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro and Nokia N8.

Customer can check out the 8ta website for more details concerning which handsets are available for free on the various contract packages and for which they must pay a fee. Four top-up packages spanning from R50 to R250 are also being bundled with offers such as the 50 free SMSs and the popular 65c flat rate tariff to landlines.

“We will connect more people and enable them to talk more,” Amith Maharaj, 8ta’s managing executive said. “We will provide more minutes for your money than any other network. These post-paid packages are further evidence that South African mobile phone users have a real choice at last.”

Telkom also unveiled three internet packages that will provide users with real time usage information, as they will be able to view how many megabytes they are using. The three internet packages are Internet 1, which provides customers with 650 MB for R250 p/m, Internet 2 giving them 1.5 GB for R280 p/m and Internet 3, providing them with 3.2 GB for R500 p/m.

If a customer used the entire data bundle before month end, he or she will be given a choice, while browsing, to continue surfing for free at a slower speed (limited to 10% of the subscriber’s chosen data bundle), wait until next month to start using the service again, choose to surf at out of bundle rates or to buy a once-off data bundle.
