Last week AMD’s CEO Dirk Meyer stated during the company’s earnings conference call that AMD’s second-generation DX11 graphics cards will be launched this week. Engadget has revealed that these cards, which will be officially unveiled on Friday, will be the AMD Radeon HD 6870 and 6850.

The cards specifications will only be revealed on Friday, but what is known so far is that these cards sport five output ports, which includes two DVI, one HDMI, as well as two Mini DisplayPorts.

In terms of the power requirements, the HD 6870 will require two 6-pin connectors to supplement the supply it obtains from the PCI Express port, whilst the HD 6850 will only make do with one.

When these GPUs are launched on the 22nd of October they will herald an end to the ATI Radeon HD 5000 range’s reign at the top of AMD’s GPU series, which includes graphics cards such as the impressive ATI Radeon HD 5770 and the mighty ATI Radeon HD 5970.

It will also be the first GPUs to be released that won’t carry the famous ATI name.
