The president of UK based tech design firm ARM Tudor Brown has revealed to Forbes, that the next version of Google’s Android operating system to follow in the footsteps of Gingerbread and Honeycomb will be Ice Cream.

 

Although Google is keeping mum over what Android 4.0 will be known as, Brown told Forbes that it will be called Ice Cream. Google has a long history of naming the versions of its smartphone (and tablet) operating systems after various delicacies, beginning with Android 1.5 (Cupcake), which was followed up by Android 1.6 (Donut).

 

Donut was succeeded by Android 2.0 (Éclair) which arrived last year and was replaced this year by the current Version 2.2 (Froyo, short for frozen yogurt). The search giant will also stick to this naming convention (as well as the alphabetical order of the names) with the next iterations of Android, which will be Gingerbread (Android 3.0) and Honeycomb (Android 3.5).

 

Details as well as the release schedule for both of these have not become available yet, but Gingerbread is expected to be released before the end of the year, whilst Honeycomb is rumoured to arrive early in 2011.
