At the beginning of the month AMD launched its Radeon HD 6990, claiming the title of fastest graphics card in the world from none other than Nvidia’s then top dog the GeForce GTX 580.  

 

In order to provide prove of its claim AMD also revealed that its dual-GPU card set a world record score of P11865 in the industry standard 3DMark11 benchmark. The company managed to surpass, amongst others, the former highest single (1x GPU) performance score available from hwbot.org, held by Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 580.  

 

Nvidia recently introduced its newest GPU and competitor to the AMD Radeon HD 6990, GeForce GTX 590, and predictably called it “fastest dual graphics card available today”. We’re pretty used to seeing the two rival GPU makers releasing a new GPU every so often and then referring to it as the fastest ever, but this time AMD isn’t going to sit back and wait for its next GPU release to reclaim its title.

 

Instead, the company has challenged Nvidia’s claim, especially in light of the fact that it gave no 3DMark11 scores to go along with that statement of world’s best. “Yesterday our competitor also issued a press release, announcing the launch of what they claim to be the ‘World’s Fastest Graphics Card’ – the Nvidia GTX 590,” stated Dave Erskine, senior Public Relations manager for Graphics Desktop at AMD, in a blogpost.

 

“We combed through their announcement to understand how it was that such a claim could be made and why there was no substantiation based on industry-standard benchmarks, similar to what AMD did with industry benchmark 3DMark 11, the latest DirectX 11 benchmark from FutureMark.”

 

Erskine actually went so far as to challenge Nvidia’s claims and asking the GPU maker to back their assertion up by proving its card to be the faster one. He also linked early reviews comparing the two GPUs and obviously, finding that the 6990 is still the fastest graphics card, including HotHardware’s and Legit Reviews comparisons.   

 

Now the GPU PR ball seems to be in Nvidia’s court.
