App download milestone looms for Apple
By Hanleigh Daniels 17 January 2011 | Categories: newsApple is on the verge of yet another significant tech milestone. In February of last year the Cupertino based company reached the ten billion mark in songs downloaded from its über-popular iTunes music service. Now the company has started the countdown to the ten billionth app to be downloaded from its App Store.
As with the previous milestone, the company is running a competition offering the lucky iPhone, iPod touch or iPad user, who downloaded the ten billionth app, a $10 000 iTunes gift card.
The App Store launched in July of 2008 and a little over a year ago Apple announced that it crossed the three billion mark in app downloads from the App Store, so remarkably the additional seven billion downloads happened in the space of about a year.
In related news, according to Mac and technology site The loop, downloads of Beatles music from the iTunes Store recently surpassed the five million mark for songs, while crossing the one millionth Beatles albums sold. Abbey Road is currently the best selling Beatles album in the US, whilst Here Comes the Sun is the best selling Beatles track.
