As the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona shifts into gear, new products and rumours have been flooding the tech world. One of the most interesting came from Apple, who also happen to be one of the only manufacturers not present at the congress. Instead Apple decided to hold their own event with reports surfacing that the company is working on a so-called “iPhone mini.”

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the new line of iPhones will be less expensive than current models, aimed at capturing a larger smartphone market share by appealing to consumers who had previously been against Apple devices due to their price.

One of the WSJ's sources. who claims to have seen a prototype of the device late last year, said it was about half the size of the current iPhone 4.

At this stage the new iPhone line is only known to us by its codename, N97, although this is sure to change as we head closer to release. It was also reported that the new phone would be available to mobile providers for half the price of the main line of iPhones, so consumers can hopefully expect some attractive pricing structures.

It was further reported by the WSJ that in addition to being smaller and lighter than the iPhone 4, the N97 line would have an edge-to-edge touch-enabled display, virtual keyboard and voice-based navigation.

A more affordable iPhone makes sense, seeing that it will capture a bigger marketshare for Cupertino, further translating in more sales on Apple’s popular App Store.

At this stage no official details or pricing have been released, but we'll be keeping our fingers crossed for a more substantial reveal in the coming weeks.
