Apple reveals fiscal Q2 2012 results
By Hanleigh Daniels 25 April 2012 | Categories: newsFinancially, Apple is showing no sign of breaking its stride or disrupting its winning sales streak.
This is clearly apparent by the Cupertino-based company’s financial results for its fiscal 2012 Q2, which saw it posting quarterly revenue of $39.2 billion and quarterly net profit of $11.6 billion. This compares very favourably to the revenue of $24.7 billion as well as net profit of $6 billion achieved by the company for the same period last year.
Apple managed to sell 35.1 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 88% unit growth over 2011 Q2. Also pressing the up button on the sales elevator is the iPad, as Apple sold 11.8 million of these during the quarter, a 151% unit increase compared to the same period last year.
The firm sold four million Macs during Q2, a 7% unit increase over the 2011 quarter, while iPod sales continue to decline as Apple sold 7.7 million of these devices. This represents a 15% unit decline from this time last year. International sales accounted for 64% of the quarter’s revenue.
“We’re thrilled with sales of over 35 million iPhones and almost 12 million iPads in the March quarter,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “The new iPad is off to a great start, and across the year you’re going to see a lot more of the kind of innovation that only Apple can deliver.” Whether Cook was alluding to the often rumoured iPad Mini (a 7.85” iPad) or last year’s frenzied expectation of the iPhone 5, however, is up for speculation.
Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO added: “Our record March quarter results drove $14 billion in cash flow from operations. Looking ahead to the third fiscal quarter, we expect revenue of about $34 billion and diluted earnings per share of about $8.68.”
In related news, the Core Group, which distributes Apple products within Southern Africa, has revealed the recommended retail prices of the third generation iPad. This highly anticipated tablet launches in South Africa this Friday and prices range between R4999 (16 GB, Wi-Fi) to R8299 (64 GB, Wi-Fi + 4G).
