Announced earlier this year during Computex, the X101 has a super thin 17.6 mm profile and weighs a mere 920 g, making it ultra-portable. It comes preloaded with Nokia and Intel’s new MeeGo operating system (OS), and will enable users to stay connected to their favorite social networks the likes of Google+, Facebook and Twitter.

Powering the MeeGo-operating X101 is Intel’s latest Atom N435 processor and the netbook also sports 1 GB of RAM, two USB 2.0 ports, a microSD Card reader, built-in webcam as well as 8 GB solid state drive (SSD) for quick start-up and launch times. Asus Super Hybrid Engine (SHE) technology is built-in to assist in conserving battery life for the X101, which is available in a variety of colors such as white, black, brown and red.

Staying social

The new MeeGo OS was developed to help users stay connected through its convenient, easy to use interface. This netbook features specific applications for Facebook, Twitter, as well as a dedicated instant messaging (IM) client, with Google’s Chrome web browser being built-in to MeeGo for web surfing purposes. Also onboard the netbook’s MeeGo-OS train is a variety of cloud-based services including asus@vibe, the asus app store as well as the popular online file storage app Dropbox.

OS choice for users

Asus’ Eee PC X101 netbook is also offered in the X101H configuration, which comes with the choice of either the conventional Windows 7 Starter PC operating system and a 250 GB HDD, or novel MeeGo OS with an 8 GB SSD. No local pricing info is available yet.
