BlackBerry holding company Research in Motion today revealed its second quarter financial results, which saw the company taking in $4.62 billion in revenue. This was an increase of 31% from $3.53 billion in the same quarter of last year.

RIM set another new record during the second quarter by shipping over 12 million BlackBerry handsets. The company has shipped approximately 115 million BlackBerry smartphones to date.

This has been a significant quarter says the company. It announced a number of new handsets, including the BlackBerry Torch 9800, released several others including the BlackBerry Pearl 3G and BlackBerry Curve 3G and also debuted its updated operating system - Blackberry OS 6.

In addition, the company also had to tackle data protection  issues in the Middle East and India, where several countries including India, Saudi Arabia and The United Arab Emirates threatened to suspend BlackBerry services in those areas if RIM did not give authorities access to encrypted messages sent over the BlackBerry network.

Despite this, the brand pushed forward and is now available from approximately 565 carriers and distribution partners in 175 countries around the world and boasts a reported user base of over 50 million globally.
