China demands web-filtering software
By Thomas McKinnon 9 June 2009 | Categories: newsChina’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, one of its five “super ministries”, announced that all PCs sold in China, even imported PCs, will have to be pre-installed with \"Green Dam Youth Escort\" filtering software.
The PRC’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said that the software, \"is aimed at blocking and filtering some unhealthy content, including pornography and violence.\"
Many fear that this web-filtering software will be used the Chinese government to boost its internet censorship system.
The directive will take effect on 1 July 2009.
