Last week Mozilla developer Nicholas Nethercote stated in a blogpost that Firefox 7 will be a lot speedier and utilise a lot less RAM, due to a new feature called MemShrink. With this Mozilla engineers aim to enhance Firefox’s speed and stability by reducing its memory usage by up to 50% compared to the current Firefox 5 and upcoming Firefox 6 browsers, but Firefox users will have to hang on for another 12–18 weeks to experience this new browser.

However, users won’t have to wait to try the company’s latest browser, Firefox 6, since a complete build of this browser is now unofficially available to be downloaded. Users who do not shy away from pre-release downloads can download (13.3 MB) the Windows, Mac (28.1 MB) and Linux (14.4 MB) versions of this browser.

According to Engadget, Firefox 6 doesn’t sport a new design over that of Firefox 5, but does boast some enhancements in terms of browsing speed. Mozilla has stated that the Android version of the browser will feature “a fresh look” adopting a new Gingerbread theme for devices operating on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), as well as being faster and utilising less memory than version 5.

In related news Mozilla is working on its own “complete, standalone operating system for the open web”, which will be competing with Google’s browser-based Chrome OS that handles the operating on its Chromebook notebooks.
