By Johan Keyter 21 September 2010 | Categories: newsGameloft, a leading publisher and developer of downloadable video games, announced that it has sold over 20 million games through the Apple App store since it opened in July 2008.
The developers launched a total of 47 iPhone and iPad games since the beginning of this year, with 42 of the titles climbing to the top 5 best-selling games list on the App Store and 25 of them reaching the number one spot.
Notable titles include Iron Man 2, which went on to become the number one best selling mobile game in the United States and Europe. Brothers in Arms 2, Global Front and N.O.V.A. (Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance) have also gone on to become some of the iPhone and iPad's best selling titles.
"The first half of 2010 marks a new step for us on the App Store," declared Michel Guillemot, president of Gameloft. "The launch of the iPad and iPhone 4 has opened new horizons for developers and allowed us once again to transform our consumers gaming experience. 20 million paid downloads is proof that our games meet the expectations of our players and we will continue to satisfy them."
Gameloft has launched a total of 100 games since the App Store launched including 18 iPhone 4 and 29 iPad games since January 2010. 15 new titles will be added to the list by the end of the year including NFL 2011 HD, Assassin's Creed: Altairs Chronicles HD and Spider-Man: Total Mayhem HD for the iPad. The iPhone 4 will see such gems as Dungeon Hunter 2, Gangstar: Miami Vindication, Star Battalion and Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus gracing its screen.
As the quality and capabilities of mobile gaming continues to expand and infringe upon hand-held territory, Nintendo and Sony are casting a weary eye towards Apple’s game offerings. Apple CEO, Steve Jobs even stated that the iPod Touch alone outsells the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP in terms of game and entertainment content.
