Microsoft has announced the launch date for the highly anticipated final chapter in the Gears of War series. Gears of War 3 will launch globally on 20 of September 2011.

The concluding chapter of the popular saga will see the story resuming eighteen months after the events of Gears of War 2 and the loss of the human stronghold of Jacinto. As can be expected Marcus, Baird, Dom and company still persist in their battle to save all of humanity.

This time round they won’t just be fighting against the Locusts, but will also be up against new threats from within the planet during the game’s campaign mode.

Gears of War 3 will also boast a five-on-five multiplayer mode, as well as a four player campaign co-op experience. New multiplayer game modes include ‘Beast Mode’, which allows gamers to assume the role of the locust horde and their assorted variations.

There will also be new maps to explore, the likes of trenches that feature sand storms, which dramatically reduces a player’s visibility, as well as others like Overpass, Mercy, Checkout and Thrashball.

To assist gamers in the task of Locusts extermination, a number of new weapons have also been included. These include the Bayonet Charge, the Retro Lancer, the Sawed-off Shotgun, as well as the OneShot. The latter being a heavy sniper rifle that shoots through shields and cover, enabling a surprise one shot kill.

The Incendiary Grenade, the Digger Launcher and a few old favourites (featuring some minor alterations) such as Hammerburst and the Classic Lancer, have also made the arsenal cut. Each and every weapon now also sports its own execution move.

Microsoft also stated that an official multiplayer public beta for the game is on the way.
