Internet search giant Google has released the latest Android mobile operating system (OS) version usage pie chart, indicating which version of the mobile OS is the most used.

Android 2.2 codenamed Froyo, released in May 2010, takes the biggest slice, with more than half (51.8%) of all active Android smartphones (such as LG’s Optimus One) running this version.  Claiming the second spot is Android 2.1 (Éclair) with 35.2% of Android phone operating on it, including Motorola’s Flipout.

The latest iteration of the OS, Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread, only makes out 0.4% of Android users. This is hardly surprising though, since only Google’s Nexus S is currently running this version of Android, which was only launched early last month.

The older versions of Android, which are Android 1.6 (Donut) and Android 1.5 (Cupcake), still represents 7.9% and 4.7% of Android users respectively. Some of these devices are due for an upgrade to a more modern version of Android soon though, including the Android 1.6-powered Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro.
