According to TorrentFreak, a new feature film will make its official debut on BitTorrent, one of the world’s largest file sharing sites.

What makes this release different from the majority of unauthorised multimedia content available through this site, is that it is being released in association with Paramount Pictures, with the BitTorrent release having the full backing of the company.

Horror movie The Tunnel (trailer posted below), is set in abandoned train tunnels under Sydney, Australia. The plot involves a Debora Patta-type investigative reporter that leads a team of four people down the tunnels in search of a scoop about a possible government cover-up.

Transmission Films and Paramount Home Entertainment Australia will be handling the distribution of the film, with the movie also being released onto DVD at the same time that it will be distributed on the net. The Tunnel DVD will sport additional content such as two hours of exclusive footage the likes of an alternate ending, as well as a documentary about the movie.

Why is it being released on BitTorrent then? According to a post on The Tunnel's website: "We believe that if we stop fighting  the peer to peer networks, they could become the biggest revolution we have ever seen in the way we share entertainment and information." This is a sentiment we can agree with.

The Tunnel will be coming to a PC screen near you on 19 May by way of a BitTorrent tracker. It probably would have done so anyway, but at least you can feel a little less guilty now seeing that it’s an officially backed release.
