This past weekend gamers and retailers throughout the UK were surprised to see online retailer Amazon UK post a dramatically reduced price for Sony's PlayStation 3 slim console, listing it for only £196 (R2280).

Sony's flagship slimline console used to retail for a recommended £255 (around R3000), so the price cut is quite substantial to say the least. The price drop also comes in the wake of special new bundles being offered in the US, with gamers able to pick up a 160 GB slimline PS3 with the new Killzone 3 included for the same price at which the console alone sold mere days ago.

According to Stingygamer, Sony is preparing the price reductions to cripple Nintendo sales once the company's new 3DS handheld releases next month. According to their sources, Sony is also dropping the prices of its PS3 SKU's (software development kits).

All this seems strategically aimed at diminishing the impact of Nintendo's 3DS handheld in order to pave the way for Sony's NGP to enjoy a more successful launch. Time and sales figures will tell whether or not the move is going to be effective. No special offers have been reported to be heading to South Africa at this stage.
