South Africa's largest internet service provider (ISP), MWEB, has announced that it had landed SAT-3 cable capacity in its Cape Town node.

This comes as part of the company's ongoing plans to increase bandwidth capacity and significantly upgrades its network's reliability.

The SAT-3 undersea fibre optic cable runs along the west coast of Africa all the way to Portugal, and is one of the continent's primary methods of sharing data with the rest of the world.

“This is another step towards ensuring a superior Internet service for MWEB customers. With international capacity on both the west and east coast of Africa our exposure to downtime on any single cable is significantly reduced. We will also be bringing international capacity directly into our data centre in Cape Town which will improve the overall experience for our ADSL customers connecting to our Cape Town IPC node.” said Derek Hershaw, CEO of MWEB.

MWEB will be purchasing capacity on the SAT-3 cable, although the service will still be managed by Seacom. Hershaw explained that this decision was due in part to the company's strong working relationship with the cable providers.

“We are excited to have confirmed these arrangements with both Seacom and SAT-3 and we will continue to look for ways to bring a first-world internet experience to our customers.” Hershaw concluded.
