Google might have joined the Android patent war with its patent support to HTC, which is currently suing Apple over patents for the third time, but that hasn’t detracted the Redmond-based software giant Microsoft from its Android royalty egg collecting path.

Microsoft has revealed that it has signed patent agreements with two new Android original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partners. First up is Acer, which has concluded a patent license agreement with Microsoft. This provides Acer with broad coverage under the Redmond-based software giant’s patent portfolio, for its Android-operating tablets and smartphones.

“We are pleased that Acer is taking advantage of our industrywide licensing program established to help companies address Android’s IP issues,” said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft.

“This agreement is an example of how industry leaders can reach commercially reasonable arrangements that address intellectual property.”

ViewSonic has also signed a similar patent agreement with Microsoft for its tablets and mobile phones, powered by Google’s Android mobile OS and Chrome web-based platform. Although the contents of the agreement have not been disclosed, Microsoft will receive royalties from ViewSonic under the terms of this agreement.

In related news Microsoft also recently announced a series of new enhancements to its App Hub developer portal, as part of the highly anticipated Windows Phone ‘Mango’ release.
