More details on forthcoming Nvidia GPU
By Hanleigh Daniels 8 November 2010 | Categories: newsMore details have emerged about Nvidia’s next generation graphical processing unit (GPU), which will probably be known as the Nvidia GeForce GTX 580.
At the beginning of the month two Chinese websites released specs and photos of what will be Nvidia’s latest and greatest GPU, and now, according to Engadget, Nvidia has unveiled that this new “unannounced” GPU will be the fastest DirectX 11 GPU available when released. The company has also stated that it will be its quietest and coolest graphics card as well.
The new GPU will make use of a new “vapor chamber cooling system”, which boasts water sealed within the chamber that gets boiled by the hot elements (a copper plate in Nvidia’s case).
This allows the heat to be transferred away from the GPU core to the parts that are being cooled by the fan. After being cooled by the fan, the water is recycled back to the plate. The end result, according to the company, is about seven decibels less operational sound as well as lower operational temperatures, when compared to the company’s current top-dog the GeForce GTX 480.
The California-based company also showed off some of the capabilities of the new GPU, including gameplay of Call of Duty: Black Ops as well as a tessellation demo, which you can view after the break. Tesselation is an advanced feature of DirectX 11, which creates smoother curved surfaces, resulting in more lifelike images.
