The sequel to Electronic Arts’ popular racing game Need for Speed: SHIFT will take to the virtual race track early in 2011.

According to IGN, EA announced that it will release Need for Speed: SHIFT 2 early next year for both consoles and PC, during its fiscal Q1 earnings conference call. No other details about the game were revealed.

“I can confirm the announcement but we have nothing more to add,” an EA representative told IGN.

The next title in the Need for Speed franchise is Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit which will be available in November and will also see a return of police to the series, which has always been the hallmark of a number of NFS games. This will come after Need for Speed World has made its racing debut on the massively multiplayer online game scene.
