Garmap has announced the latest version of its Africa Series map, which the company says offers its users more than an A-to-B navigation service, by presenting location-based services that sport more valuable additions.
 
The latest release map data contains basic street-level changes following ongoing construction as well as modifications to South Africa’s roadways, which includes new interchanges on the major highways and new roads. It also offers comprehensive data concerning stadia, parking areas, fan parks, park and ride/walk sites, drop-off points, ticket offices and pedestrian walkways for the large number of sports fans and tourists that will be making their way to South Africa for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
 
Garmap Africa Series 2010 2nd Edition also boasts enhanced points of interest (POIs), which now incorporates additional info, such as photos, short descriptions and contact details. These POIs are identifiable on the GPS screen as simple icons to enable easy navigation. Other special features on Garmap’s 2010 2nd Edition map include over 7 000 accommodation listings from accommodation and travel guide SafariNow, 127 selected Cape wine estates provided by Wine Magazine, 113 PGA golf courses in South Africa as well as a further 63 others around Southern Africa provided by Compleat Golfer. There are also various popular geo-tagged sites and POIs in the Kruger National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park based on the well-known Peter’s Guide Books. The latest Africa Series release can be purchased online from the Garmap website or participating retail outlets for R20 (excluding map license).
 
“Users can also pair their Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones with compatible GPS units and, if a POI has a phone number attached to it, they can easily dial the venue to make a reservation at a restaurant, for example,” Garmap’s chief technology officer, Dr. Chris Crozier explained. “Garmap’s new map data is all about convenience, safety and helping people save time by giving them the ability to plan their trips better, and the latest edition delivers just that, with the most up-to-date maps and the most comprehensive list of POIs in Southern Africa.”
