News: New Pokemon games break Japanese sales records

The latest title in the long line of Pokémon games for Nintendo's hand-helds, Pokémon Black and White, has sold a record 2.63 million copies in its first two days of release.

The new games, exclusive to the Nintendo DS, went on sale this Saturday in Japan and broke the record for the best opening week sales in Japanese sales history, according to CVG.

From its tentative beginnings as a 1996 Gameboy title released only in Japan, the Pokémon role-playing games have grown immensely in popularity over the years. In 1998 the rest of the world was introduced to the hand-held Pokémon phenomenon with the release of Pokémon Red and Blue.

A string of games have been released for the Nintendo DS over the years. Diamond, Pearl and Platinum introduced players to new regions, while last year's HeartGold and SoulSilver served as remakes of the Gameboy titles, Gold and Silver.

The games have always been wildly popular in Japan, featuring on television and radio shows and attracting buyers from all age groups. Famous Japanese gaming magazine, Famitsu, even gave the new Black and White games a perfect 40/40 review score.

Non-Japanese Pokémon fans will unfortunately have to wait until autumn (April/May) 2011 when the translated versions of the games will be released here.
