According to CVG, Konami has officially announced that the eighth Silent Hill game will be released next year on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Earlier in the year we reported on the new Silent Hill title that is in the works, but this is the first time we’ve seen some actual footage and details regarding the upcoming horror title.

Anyone who has played a Silent Hill game before will know that it's the pinnacle of digital horror experiences and Konami says the title will “stay true to the franchise's original roots”, meaning gamers can expect the same third person horror experience from the series.

The plot centres around a prison inmate whose transport vehicle careened off the road as he was being transferred between facilities. As if things weren't bad enough, convict Murphy Pendleton now finds himself stranded alone in the town of Silent Hill.

Following in the footsteps of previous titles, players can expect to use the environment to their advantage as they battle for survival against the eerie denizens of the town. Everything from chairs to glass bottles and kitchen utensils will have to be employed if players want to stay alive.

Konami has promised that the “dark, thought-provoking storyline” will appeal to fans of the classic Silent Hill titles as well as those who simply like a bit of psychological horror in their entertainment.

“In honouring the rich history and strong following of Silent Hill, we're working hard to build a next generation horror game that the fans truly deserve,” said Shinji Hirano, president of Konami.

The next game promises to introduce a new story along with new characters and gameplay mechanics to the established Silent Hill universe, ensuring players can experience true survival horror and terror, in high definition.
