In two announcements that are in keeping with the arrival of spring and the upcoming summer months, Nikon South Africa showed a lighter side of itself with the introduction of a red D3100 to its DSLR camera range. This is the first time the camera manufacturer has introduced a DSLR model in a primary colour.

The red D3100, which is Nikon’s popular entry-level DSLR, will offer the same 14.2 megapixels, Guide Mode, full HD movie, and Live View modes as the original D3100. However, the company explained that the introduction of a red model is set to broaden the camera’s appeal among first-time DSLR users, families and young people.

The D3100 boasts a number of features, including ISO sensitivity from ISO 100 to ISO 3200 for low light photography and Picture Control. This  enables users to customise the appearance of their images in-camera with one of six settings - Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait and Landscape - to determine the look of photos and full HD movies before recording an image.

The company elaborated that the original D3100 camera has been popular amongst newcomers to DSLR photography, and been particularly well received by families, as the camera “makes it easy to shoot beautiful photos and full HD movies capturing those unmissable times.”

Roxy Louw new ambassador

The company also announced that it had secured Roxy Louw as the ambassador for the recently launched Nikon COOLPIX AW100 camera. Featured as an essential piece of kit in our Tech Outdoors issue, and as one of our Must Have Outdoor Gadgets this spring, the COOLPIX AW100 is aimed at those who enjoy an active lifestyle and desired a compact camera that could withstand the rigors of their outdoor adventures.

The 16 megapixel camera boasts a 5x zoom and is waterproof to ten metres, freeze-proof  to minus ten degrees Celsius and shockproof from heights of up to 1.5 metres, while boasting full HD (1080p) video. Perhaps most notably and in keeping with its adventure focus, the camera includes a built-in GPS, electronic compass and integrated world map, enabling users to geotag their images and track their route when exploring.

Romi Jacobs, chief brand officer for Nikon in South Africa, explained that Louw, as a South African model and surfer, was the perfect representative for the Nikon COOLPIX AW100. Nikon South Africa hosted an event on 1 September 2011 at the 100th store opening of Kauai at the new Eden on the Bay shopping centre in Bloubergstrand where Roxy (accompanied by her dad Rob) tested the capabilities of the Nikon COOLPIX AW100 in the Atlantic Ocean.
