Nikon launches smallest full frame DSLR yet
By Staff Writer 13 September 2012 | Categories: newsThere’s been a lot of good news for photographers recently, and Nikon looks set to continue this trend with news of its new entry-level full frame DSLR – the D600. Although we say entry-level it will set buyers back $2 200 (no local price or release info yet), but compared to the next in line FX-format (Nikon’s full frame range) camera, the $3 000 D700, it’s less expensive.
This 24.3 megapixel camera’s full frame CMOS sensor measures 36.0 x 23.9 mm, much larger than the more common APS-C sensor’s 25.1 x 16.7 mm. This allows for better low-light performance, tonal range and picture quality.
Nikon states that the autofocus system is as sensitive as its flagship D4 model, offering precise subject acquisition down to -1 EV. Furthermore you are also looking at the same Expeed 3 image processing engine as on the D4, a 39-point autofocus system and ISO that ranges from 100-6400 but extendable to a high 25 600.
Those interested in movies should know that the Nikon D600’s Multi-area D-Movie is based on the same technology as Nikon’s D800, with Full HD (1080p) movies recorded in 30p, 25p and 24p, with 60p, 50p and 25p options at 720p, and movies lasting no longer than 29 minutes 59 seconds. Pictures can be viewed on the 3.2" LCD monitor at the back that comes with a respectable 921 000 dot resolution.
The D600 is also the smallest and lightest full-frame camera Nikon has manufactured (760 g without battery), while it is also weather-sealed to the same degree as its recently introduced D800.
Romi Jacobs, chief marketing officer for Nikon in South Africa, said: “We’re really excited about the potential of the Nikon D600 to bring FX models to a broader range of photographers than ever before. Many sincere enthusiasts have been waiting for this. The fact that it inherits some of the latest technology from our pro cameras means this camera really is a game-changer in its segment.”
We’ll keep you updated about the price and availability of the Nikon D600 locally.
